Why Visit Cuyabeno? The Hidden Paradise of the Ecuadorian Amazon

If you're seeking an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the most lush Amazon jungle, Cuyabeno is your ideal destination. This Wildlife Production Reserve, located in the Sucumbíos province in northeastern Ecuador, will amaze you with its unique biodiversity, breathtaking landscapes, and the warmth of its indigenous communities.

How to Get to Cuyabeno?

The most common route to reach Cuyabeno is: Lago Agrio - Dureno - Pacayacu - Tarapoa - Puente Cuyabeno. From there, you travel by boat along the river to your chosen lodge. The navigation time can vary between 2 and 4 hours depending on the season and the entry point.

What to Do in Cuyabeno?

  • Explore the jungle: Hike through trails, spot exotic birds (such as toucans, macaws, and the iconic hoatzin), playful monkeys (like the capuchin, spider, and howler monkeys), and pink dolphins in their natural habitat.
  • Visit indigenous communities: Get to know the traditions and customs of the Sionas, Secoyas, Cofanes, Kichwas, and Shuaras, and learn about their ancestral knowledge of the jungle.
  • Wildlife observation: Besides pink dolphins, you'll have the chance to spot caimans, otters, anacondas, and various types of monkeys like capuchins, titi monkeys, or Barizos. You may also encounter rare species like the hoatzin or the regional eagle, with its impressive 8-foot wingspan.
  • Night walks: Discover the jungle under the moonlight and observe the nocturnal life of the forest.

Flora and Fauna

Cuyabeno's flora is a feast for the senses. The imposing water guarango trees, adapted to live in flooded soils, are the reserve's symbol. Among the tangle of vines and epiphytes, like orchids and bromeliads, various species of palm trees and fruit trees are hidden. The Victoria regia, one of the largest aquatic lilies in the world, decorates the lagoons with its enormous circular leaves. These plants, along with many others, have developed unique adaptations to survive in this humid and ever-changing environment.

Cuyabeno's fauna is incredibly diverse. Majestic jaguars stalk from the thickets, while pink dolphins glide through the rivers in search of food. Among the primates, the spider monkeys stand out for their long arms, and the howler monkeys, whose vocalizations echo throughout the jungle. In the waters, black caimans and anacondas share their habitat with a wide variety of fish, such as piranhas and catfish. Additionally, birds like toucans, macaws, and hoatzins fill the forests with their colorful plumage and melodious songs.

Ancestral Medicine

The indigenous communities of Cuyabeno possess deep knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants. During your visit, you can learn about their traditional uses and participate in ancestral ceremonies.
