Casa Gangotena occupies a prime location in the old town of Quito: the southwest corner of San Francisco Plaza, with a history dating back to the time of the Incas. According to early Spanish chroniclers, the plaza was surrounded by temples and palaces in the 15th century, with a temple located precisely where Casa Gangotena now stands. Over the following centuries, this grand plaza would serve as the site of a massive open-air market (also known as the "Tianguiz") for indigenous traders from the surrounding regions.
In 1978, Quito’s old town earned the honor of being the first city designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its extensive and well-preserved historic center. Later, Casa Gangotena was added to the cherished inventory of the city's cultural heritage.
Don't miss the opportunity to visit our third-floor terrace. From there, you can marvel at the panoramic views of majestic mountains and volcanoes while contemplating the profound historical significance of San Francisco Plaza, along with its neighboring churches and establishments.
